A Change Story

Change rains down upon you, or maybe you have chosen to make a change.  It doesn’t matter; you’ve just been thrown into what we call the Change Curve.  Now you are in for a ride!  What kind of ride you take will depend on the choices you make.  Here we go!

You enter the ride called Change Happens, and you will have all sorts of questions.  What does it mean?  Why is it happening?  How is it going to work?  But without all your questions being answered, you are at the front of the line and are pushed into the ride.  Now, the ride moves into a tunnel, and you enter into darkness where you wonder what’s going to happen next.  You are shocked that this change takes you right into darkness and confusion about “why?” sets in.  Suddenly, you come out of the darkness and before you looms a hug drop-off.  In your mind, you put the brakes on.  You shift back into the seat and grip the handles, as if you could stop the car from moving forward.  “Resist at all costs!” you think.  But the car creeps towards that drop-off and you realize that there is not stopping this change; better start thinking about how you are going to survive, instead.  You can remember other rides where it all turned out fine.  You tap into inner strength that well up from beneath the fear, and you quickly explore how to pull that strength up into the present moment.  Then the ride creeps over the edge, and down, down you go!  At the bottom, you sigh in relief while you recognize, as the car starts to climb again, that there’s another drop in store for you.  This time, though, you are ready, as you know that last drop was really nothing to be afraid of, even though you felt so scared.  So, you commit to having fun this time.  “I’m going to really get into it this time!”

On the ride goes and it eventually comes to a stop.  You climb out to see others waiting on the doorsteps of the change.  You think, “What if someone had just engaged me in dialogue of what the future ride looked like?  And you take on championing this ride of change and helping others figure out what would work to minimize the pain and fair of that first drop-off.
