Leadership Brief: Why We Need Humble Leaders

Posted on 12. Jun, 2011 by in 2 Leadership Brief

We are exhausted, bored, disgusted by the bottomless-list of people in power behaving as if they are above reproach. Sure this is stating the obvious. What is not obvious, however, is the influence it has on society.

A less overwhelming view of the impacts is how it affects you, the people on your teams and those reporting to you, if you’re a manager.

• We all run the risk of becoming jaded or more jaded by the endless storyline about the abuses of power by highly visible politicians, athletes, executives

• We all run the risk of letting apathy rise up and blind us to the extraordinary acts from individual contributors, middle managers, community members, and yes, even politicians, athletes, executives

The risks are high and all too enticing to let our eyes, ears, hearts, hands, and feet dismiss the world as lost. Indeed those stories are prevalent. But you cannot give up that you have a story to unleash, a message to inspire those in your circle to believe in the possibility of leadership.

The possibility of leadership is an antidote to the negative-ninjas (those who karate-chop any idea). The antidote brings hope, inspiration, authenticity, and humbleness. You can be the antidote.

The possibility of leadership emboldens those who accept it and can ignore the jaded and apathetic realities. Such realities can be transformed into a reminder that something greater is within reach. And this is what humbles the person who accepts leadership as the antidote.

When you can see how today’s times can lose others (tune out), you get how important it becomes to act to stop and reverse the negative influences. It’s humbling when we hear this calling.

We need humble leaders who recognize that people are hungry to be inspired again. To know there is a converse to the exhausting, boring acts from those who believe their actions that cause harm are excusable or can be explained away.

We need humble leaders to draw the proverbial line in the sand to show that there are plenty of leaders who care. I believe you are one of them. So please, draw your line.
