More to This Life Than Work

More to This Life Than Work

Last night I read a short and thoughtful post from leadership blogger Aaron Biebert aka 8pm Warrior. Aaron’s posts are usually poignant and thought provoking. This was no exception. His message: “Don’t confuse your business with your own identity.”

As a small business owner, Aaron’s words are spot on, but difficult to honor.

I know for many who are employees the message applies.

Yet it seems hard wired into our being to work our butts off. With all our hard work, not to mention we spend 1/3 of our life at work, it’s no surprise our identity is our work.

All too often it takes a major life event to pause from pouring ourselves into our work. This weekend in America we will be pausing as we honor the fallen and the heroes from the 9/11 attacks.

The 9/11 remembrance and Aaron’s words combined make a powerful message.

This weekend, stop for a moment, or an hour, a day, or the whole weekend, and spend time with those in your life whom you love. Celebrate together. In the end it’s that we love and are loved that matters.

As for me, I’m not working this weekend. This blog and all my projects can wait two days while I spend time with my family…and watch some football.

Hey Shawn, that’s a real honor to be mentioned in your post.

I agree with you that it’s so hard to keep your identity when pouring your heart into a business. It’s one of my biggest challenges.

Relax and have fun this weekend. I look forward to reading more of your posts.

Thanks, Aaron, for stopping by. Your message resonates with me. You do a great job reminding us all what’s important in life.

So here’s to finding the plug and yanking the cord for at least a day or two.
