The Trouble with Hurrying
Posted on 29. Nov, 2011 by Shawn Murphy in 1 Leadership
The trouble with hurrying is it trains us to pay less attention to the nuances and subtleties in our interactions with others. We master the art of brevity in our interactions when what is needed are deeper connections. We miss insightful observations in the already-ran scenario of rushing to the next meeting. We miss the hints people signal that they need more.
Relationships suffer. Sanity takes a back seat to madness. Ridiculous becomes normal.
What are you missing in your hurry to get to the next thing?
What leadership moments fail to happen because you are hurried to meet a deadline?
The trouble with hurrying is that the moments to show people that they matter are lost in the need to make a point, to get through the meeting. The list of lost moments could be endless.
Unfortunately the more time we give to hurrying the more time demands from us. We each must wean ourselves off the monkey and find our own way to balance the need to hurry and the importance of being present for those who need us.

The irony of hurrying is that life goes by faster as well. I am always in a rush and it feels like my life is going by like those calendar pages did to show the passage of time in old movies!
