What’s Your Word Worth?

What’s Your Word Worth?

Posted on 05. Dec, 2009 by in Change In Action

We create our world by the words we use. This is followed by the actions we take.  When the two align, we create integrity.  What we say and do can be counted on.  But when the two don’t match up what is created?

It’s this question that has me so focused on what my word is worth.  If I say I’ll do something and I don’t, what do I create for people in my life? For myself?  For my community? Do I create disappointment? Frustration? Disdain? Distrust?

Quite frankly it could be any of the above and more. What I do know is that what I create is not what I want.  I want my word to create a world that is congruent with my actions. And that people know the two are congruent.  I want to create a world that friends, family, clients know the value of my word.

What world do you create with your words in business? In your relationships? When your words and actions don’t match do you let yourself off the hook by down playing it? Or perhaps you have people you trust to “call you on it” when your words and actions don’t align.  We’ve got to stop tossing around our words as if they have no value.

Your leadership experiment is to observe the impact your word has on others.  Observe what happens when you honor your word. Observe what happens when you don’t.  When you don’t honor your word, acknowledge it with the right person/people and move forward.
